WILKES BARRE, Pa. (April 12, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team fell in a non-conference match at King's College Tuesday. The score was 7-2.
The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders back to .500 on the season (3-3), while the Monarchs get back to .500 with the win (5-5).
Rutgers-Newark will visit Bloomfield Thursday and hosts Mount Saint Mary College on Friday, before welcoming Ramapo College to The Golden Dome Courts for the Scarlet Raiders' GNAC opener.
The two Rutgers-Newark points in the match came from
Richard Nguyen and
Raheel Khawaja at No. 3 doubles, winning their match, 8-5, and
Joe Codomo at No. 4 singles. Codomo won his match, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, battling hard for the Scarlet Raiders.
"Joe in his match, and
Mazzen Elebrashy in his. Both really battled for the team," said Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "We were right there in this one, and despite the final score, I felt it was a solid match for us in what is going to be a key week."
Stan Wu and Codomo were close at No. 2 doubles, falling 8-6, and Wu dropped a tough one at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-3.
Elebrashy dropped a marathon at No. 6, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 11-9 to Ryan Kopishke.
Ray Fan picked up four games in his match at No. 1, as did
Nadeem Hilal at No. 3.
