NEWARK, N.J. (April 20, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team snapped a five-match skid on Wednesday afternoon, rolling to an 8-1 win over Lehman College to start a busy week.
Rutgers-Newark improves to 4-6 with the non-conference win, and Lehman falls to 4-9.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action at home on Thursday when they host the City College of New York (CCNY) on The Golden Dome Courts.
The match of the day went to
Ray Fan who picked up a well-earned 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win over Jason Strudwick at No. 1 singles.
"Ray was definitely our headliner today," said Head Coach
Tom Battaglia after the triumph. "He played one heck of a match against an extremely talented player who has won multiple conference honors already this year."
Rutgers-Newark took a 2-1 lead into singles play, falling at No. 1 doubles, but getting an 8-1 victory at No. 2 from
Joe Codomo and
Stan Wu, and an 8-0 shutout from
Raheel Khawaja and
Richard Nguyen at No. 3.
In addition to Fan, the Scarlet Raiders swept singles play and did so in convincing fashion.
Nadeem Hilal won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, Codomo blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Wu was victorius 6-4, 6-2 out of the fourth slot. Veteran
Benjamin Lioue and Khawaja both blanked their foes at five and six.
Codomo, Wu and Khawaja all went a flawless 2-0 on the day.
"Hopefully this gets us back on track," added Battaglia. "We need to carry this over to tomorrow's match and then need to do the same thing against a conference rival on their courts Saturday at Albertus Magnus."
