NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 23, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team won its third-straight match Saturday in Connecticut, downing Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Albertus Magnus, 7-2.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference, and will host Berkeley College Monday at 7 p.m. on The Golden Dome Courts. After Monday's match, R-N will visit FDU-Florham before a big GNAC match at Rutgers University-Camden on Wednesday to close the season. With a win in the season finale, R-N would reach the conference playoffs.
Rutgers-Newark went up 3-0 after doubles play and never looked back.
Ray Fan and
Nadeem Hilal won 8-4 at No. 1,
Joe Codomo and
Richard Nguyen were victorious by the same count at No. 2, and
Stan Wu and
Benjamin Lioue won 8-5 out of the third slot.
"Going up 3-0 after doubles was huge today," said Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "We made some changes to the lineup, and the guys came out with great intensity from the start. It's a big win for us and gives us a chance to play in the postseason."
Albertus took victories at Nos. 1 and 5 in singles action, and the Raiders triumphed at the four other spots. Hilal improved to 2-0 on the day with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2, and Nguyen did the same with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3. Codomo won by a 6-2, 6-3 final out of the fourth slot (2-0), with Lioue improving to 2-0 on the afternoon with an 8-3 victory at No. 6 singles.
