NEWARK, N.J. (April 25, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team won its fourth-straight match on Monday, rolling to an 8-1 triumph over Berkeley College on The Golden Dome Courts.
The Scarlet Raiders cruised ahead 3-0 after doubles play, and senior
Benjamin Lioue clinched the victory with the team's fifth point out of the fifth singles slot in his final career match in Newark.
Rutgers-Newark improves to 7-6 overall and will visit FDU-Florham Tuesday. R-N will then head to Camden, N.J. and Rutgers University-Camden for a GNAC contest Wednesday, with the winner getting a spot in the conference semifinals against Ramapo College.
"Ben is our only returning senior, so it was great to send him out with a win tonight," said Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "It's only appropriate he clinched the match in his final match here at The Golden Dome."
Lioue won 6-0, 6-1 in his match as the Scarlet Raiders dropped just nine games in singles that they won.
Nadeem Hilal won 6-1, 6-4 out of the second slot,
Richard Nguyen won 8-4 at No. 3 and
Joe Codomo rolled 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Lioue cruised in his match, with
Raheel Khawaja breezing 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6
In doubles action,
Ray Fan and Hilal gutted out an 8-6 win at No. 1, Codomo and Nguyen won via clean sweep at No. 2 (8-0), and Wu and Lioue took their match, 8-1.
Rutgers-Newark went 24-7 (games) in doubles action, and went 36-4 in their singles matches out of the fourth, fifth and six slots.
Hilal, Codomo, Nguyen and the veteran Lioue all went 2-0.
