Box Score

CAMDEN, N.J. (April 27, 2016)
– The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 Great Northeast Athletic Conference defeat at the hands of Rutgers University-Camden Wednesday evening in Camden, N.J.

With the loss, the Scarlet Raptors earn a spot in the GNAC semifinals against Ramapo College, improving to 2-1 in the league and 6-6 overall. The Scarlet Raiders falls to 1-2 in the conference and 7-7 overall as the top two teams from each division in the GNAC play each other for a berth in the conference title match.

Despite the loss, first-year Head Men's Tennis Coach Tom Battaglia is very optimistic in his program's future.

"I think we are on our way, and the guys are really starting to buy in. I challenged everyone at the beginning of the season to become better and work harder, and we saw a great deal of improvement. We still have a way to go, but I'm confident in the future."

Rutgers-Newark fell behind 2-1 after doubles play, dropping matches out of the second and third flights, but coming out on top at No. 1, 8-2 behind the play of Ray Fan and Nadeem Hilal.

Hilal was the lone Scarlet Raiders to go 2-0, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, while Richard Nguyen came back for a nice 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 triumph out of the third slot. Joe Codomo took 16 games in what was a tough loss at No. 4 for the Raiders, falling 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Raheel Khawaja won eight games in a 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 6 for Newark.

The Scarlet Raiders - who had a match at FDU-Florham postponed on Tuesday - are still looking for a date to make up that contest. If a date is agreed upon, it will be announced.

Streaks: The Scarlet Raiders had a winning streak of three matches this season as well as a winning streak of four matches. The loss to Camden snapped the four-match streak on Wednesday night.

Streaks 2: Raheel Khawaja and Richard Nguyen are currently on a four-match winning streak when playing together in doubles action.
