NEWARK, N.J. (September 23, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team was defeated by a score of 9-0 Friday evening in its 2016 Fall opener against Drew University on The Golden Dome Courts in Newark.
Rutgers-Newark is playing matches in the fall for the first time in program history.
"It's great to get the guys competing all year long," said Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "We played a very talented team today, but regardless of the result it's a big step for us as we try and get better. Playing all year will allow our guys to become stronger players and will help us in reaching our goal of playing for a GNAC title"
The Scarlet Raiders nearly earned a win at No. 1 doubles as Brandon Davis and
Richard Nguyen pushed Salikh Gilmutdinov and Vineet Vemulapally before falling 8-6. At Nos. 2 and 3, R-N combined to win four games, dropping both battles by finals of 8-2.
Abhinav Dani was the closest singles players to getting a win, falling 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6, with Davis and Nguyen winning three games apiece out of the first and third slot, respectively.
Rutgers-Newark will return to action on The Golden Dome Courts Saturday when the Scarlet Raiders host Farmingdale State College. Opening serve is slated for 12 p.m.
