NEWARK, N.J. (September 24, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking defeat Saturday afternoon on The Golden Dome Courts, falling by a 5-4 final to Farmingdale State College.
The match was a battle from the start and despite the tough loss, Head Coach
Tom Battaglia saw plenty of positives.
"It was a very close match today and a few points either way made all the difference. As much as we wanted the win, we need to look at this experience as helping us in the spring."
Rutgers-Newark led 2-1 after doubles play, getting triumphs out of the second and third slots. Youssef Rizk and
Stan Wu were victorious at No. 2, 9-8 (7-5) in a tiebreak, with Abhinav Dani and Kevin Martin pulling out an 8-6 win at No. 3.
Farmingdale won at the first and second flight of singles, but R-N's Brandon Davis and
Nadeem Hilal battled hard. Davis won six games at No. 1, and Hilal fell in a marathon, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Rizk improved to 2-0 on the day with a well-earned 7-5, 6-3 triumph at No. 3, and Alan Yu – in his first match with the Scarlet Raiders – came back for a 1-6, 6-1, 10-2 win at No. 6.
"It was really nice seeing Alan (Yu) and Kevin (Martin) get wins in their first matches with the team," added Battaglia.
Rutgers-Newark will return to its fall schedule Wednesday when the Scarlet Raiders visit Mount Saint Mary College. Opening serve is set for 6 p.m.
