NEWBURGH, N.Y. (September 28, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team picked up a thrilling 5-4 victory at Mount Saint Mary College Wednesday evening at the Kaplan Tennis Courts in Newburgh.
 
The win is the first of the fall season for Rutgers-Newark as the Scarlet Raiders improve to 1-2. The Knights fall to 0-3.
 
A year after falling to the Knights 8-1 at home, Rutgers-Newark went on the road and knocked off Mount Saint Mary in an incredibly tight and competitive match.
 
Clinching the one-point victory was Richard Nguyen at No. 3 singles. Nguyen dropped the first set, 2-6, but rallied, earning a gut wrenching 7-5 win in the second and rolling 6-0 in the third to top Shane Terry and send Rutgers-Newark to the win.
 
"The match ended up coming down to Richard and he came through," said Head Coach Tom Battaglia. "He did a nice job of mixing up his shots and changing pace which made the difference in the comeback win."
 
In other singles action, R-N took points at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. Abhinav Dani went 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, Stan Wu rolled 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Kevin Martin came out on top 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6.
 
Rutgers-Newark went into singles play trailing 2-1, falling at Nos.  1 and 3 doubles, but getting a win at No. 2 as Stan Wu and Youssef Rizk topped Chris Jaros and Terry, 8-6.
 
"We have such incredible depth on our roster this year," added Battaglia. "To think that we don't have three strong players with us this fall and to do what we did these past few matches is extremely encouraging. I think I speak for everyone in saying that I can't wait to see what we can do in the spring."
