Box Score | Highlights

NEWARK, N.J. (March 24, 2017)
– The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team suffered a defeat against a talented Baruch College squad Friday evening on The Golden Dome Courts in Newark, falling by an 8-1 final.

Baruch was able to jump out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, and the Bearcats also won 5-of-6 singles matches. Rutgers-Newark moves to 2-3 on the 2016-17 season and 1-1 this spring. Baruch improves to 1-2 overall.

The Scarlet Raiders return to the courts Saturday morning, hosting Pratt Institute in Newark. The match will begin at 10 a.m. on The Golden Dome Courts due to afternoon rain in the forecast.

From Head Coach Tom Battaglia:
I don't think I have ever had a smile on my face after a loss like I did today. Our guys played exactly how I wanted in doubles. We were aggressive and we followed up our serves with strong first volleys.

We knew coming into this match that we were playing a team that was vastly improved from last year, and a team that is going to have a strong chance at its conference title. I am proud of our effort today, and it makes us hungry for our match tomorrow morning.

Rutgers-Newark earned its point thanks to reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week Alan Yu who rolled 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Yu improved to 2-0 in singles action in his young collegiate career.

Brandon Davis and Ray Fan battled it out at No. 1 doubles, taking five games in what ended up being an 8-5 loss. Parth Shah and Kevin Martin at No. 2 and Nadeem Hilal and Stan Wu at No. 3 each picked up two games in losses as well.

Davis was soundly defeated in his first set out of the first singles slot, but showed a lot coming back to win the second, 7-5. He eventually lost in a pro-set, but showed well overall. Fan won two games at No. 2 singles as did senior Abhinav Dani at No. 4. Shah picked up three games in a loss at No. 3, while Hilal took five a 6-2, 6-3 defeat at No. 5.
