NEWARK, N.J. (April 21, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Friday afternoon on The Golden Dome Courts in Newark.
Rutgers-Newark drops to 7-5 overall and will return to action Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. against Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Rutgers University-Camden on The Golden Dome Courts. The winner of Saturday's match will earn a berth in the GNAC Tournament, and it is also part of the Spring Sports Showcase.
FDU was able to take a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with the pairing of juniors
Ray Fan and
Brandon Davis coming out on top by a score of 8-4 out of the first slot. Senior
Parth Shah and junior
Kevin Martin picked up five games at No. 2 doubles, ultimately falling, 8-5.
Davis played a role in both points for the Scarlet Raiders, earning the team's singles tally out of the No. 1 spot by winning 8-4. The Devils were able to get wins in the rest of the singles action, but
Ray Fan won six games at No. 2 and
Alan Yu picked up four at No. 5.
All the singles matches were played via pro sets since both the Scarlet Raider men and women were playing the Devils Friday afternoon.
FDU improved to 8-4 with the victory.
