Highlights
NEWARK, N.J. (April 27, 2017) – Stockton University topped Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 6-1 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) baseball game Thursday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.
The Scarlet Raiders fall to 8-7 in the conference and 22-11-1 overall, while the Ospreys improve 14-17 overall and 6-9 in the NJAC. The two teams will close the home-and-home series Friday afternoon at Stockton. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
The two starting pitchers – junior
Dominick Fazio for Rutgers-Newark and sophomore Ray Hughes for Stockton – started strong, each retiring the side in order in the first and stranding a pair in the second.
Each team did not capitalize on great chances to score in the third, but Stockton broke through with three unearned runs on two hits and two errors in fourth. Hughes stranded two of his six walks through four in the fourth to keep his team on top 3-0, but the Scarlet Raiders would finally break through in the sixth. Junior
Brian Boulineau led off with a walk, and junior
Ross Halkias lined an RBI double down the left-field line for the first Scarlet Raider run of the game.
Stockton scored two runs in its half of the seventh inning with one coming on a solo home run off the bat of junior Joe Pipher, and the Ospreys added one in the eighth for the final margin.
Fazio went the first five for the Scarlet Raiders, allowing three unearned runs on six hits (four walks) and seven strikeouts. Senior
Vincent Enea was one of two Scarlet Raiders pitching in relief, and he went the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Hughes picked up the win for Stockton (3-3), tossing eight strong innings. He allowed one run on three hits, walking eight and striking out 11.
Junior
Adam Tricarico led the Scarlet Raider offense, going 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Marks and Halkias had the other Raider hits, with Halkias driving in the Newark run. Boulineau scored the R-N marker and he walked three times, and junior
Anthony Perconte worked a pair of free passes.
Following Friday's game at Stockton, Rutgers-Newark will host Montclair State University at TD Bank Park (home of the Somerset Patriots) for an NJAC doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. and prior to the game, Rutgers-Newark will honor its seniors.
