A box score will be posted as soon as possible
MAHWAH, N.J. (April 29, 2017) – No. 1 seeded Ramapo College topped second-seeded Rutgers University-Newark in the semifinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Tennis Championship Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers-Newark ends its season 8-8 overall and the eight wins represent the most in more than 10 years. Ramapo advances to the GNAC title match against Johnson and Wales University with the win.
The official final score of the match was 5-0, but the coaches let all matches finish with the Roadrunners taking eight and Newark taking one.
"We knew today would be tough, but we left it all on the court," said Head Coach
Tom Battaglia after the match. "A few tiebreaks in a couple second sets go our way it's a different outcome. The guys fought very hard and that's all I can ask for. There is a reason Ramapo is the defending champions – they are solid at every spot in their lineup."
Senior
Joe Codomo tallied the Rutgers-Newark point, winning his match 8-4 in a pro-set. Codomo came back to earn the triumph in the final match of his career, winning seven-straight games after falling behind 4-1.
Codomo and junior
Nadeem Hilal battled at No. 3 doubles, falling just short, 8-6, as the Roadrunners held a 3-0 advantage after that portion of the match.
Freshman
Brandon Davis fell at No. 1 singles by a 6-1, 7-6, and Hilal won seven games in a 6-4, 6-3 loss out of the third slot.
"Every year you strive to make the NCAA Tournament, and we came up short on that goal," added Battaglia. "We will regroup, bring in some solid players and go back to work. Next year will be an emotional one as we will be graduating three seniors. Hopefully we send them out after a historic season."
