Men’s Tennis Stumbles at Ramapo in GNAC Action

Box Score

MAHWAH, N.J. (April 8, 2017)
– The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team was defeated at Ramapo College Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match. The final score was 9-0.

Ramapo moves to 1-0 in league play and 4-6 overall, while the Scarlet Raiders drop to 0-1 in the conference and 5-4 overall. Rutgers-Newark also sees its three-match winning stream come to end.

Ramapo was able to take a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Junior Nadeem Hilal and sophomore Richard Nguyen earned six games in an 8-6 loss at No. 2 to lead the Scarlet Raiders, and the pairings of Ray Fan/Brandon Davis and Parth Shah/Joe Codomo each won three games out of the first and third slots.

In singles action, Rutgers-Newark battled, but the Roadrunners were too much. Davis did all he could to force a third set in a 6-2, 7-5 loss at No. 1, and Shah showed well in a 6-3, 7-5 defeat at No. 4. Nguyen and Codomo clawed at five and six, but succumbed late as well, falling by scores of 6-2, 7-5 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively.

"Our men came out a little tight in singles play," said Head Coach Tom Battaglia. "We felt we could keep the scores close, and once we fell behind it was a little too late. Credit to our guys who were able to push and make the second sets close."

Rutgers-Newark will visit Western Connecticut State University on April 14 before they return to Newark for a key GNAC home match against Albertus Magnus College on April 15.

"We need to continue working and practicing hard," added Battaglia. "We need make sure we make the most of every opportunity in front of us because we want to be able to come back here for the GNAC Playoffs."
