Softball Stays Hot in Florida; R-N Routs Lasell, Minnesota-Morris

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. (March 13, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark softball team rolled to two more wins in Florida Tuesday, improving to 5-1 on the season.
 
The Scarlet Raiders opened the day with a 12-0 win over Lasell College, and rolled over the University of Minnesota-Morris in the nightcap, 19-2.
 
Rutgers has now won three-straight games, and has outscored the opposition 61-17 in 2018. During their current three-game victory streak, the Scarlet Raiders tallied 39 runs while allowing just two runs against.
 
R-N will look to remain hot Thursday when it battles Roger Williams (11 a.m.) and Fitchburg State (3 p.m.).
 
Rutgers-Newark 12, Lasell 0
Tuesday's first game gave Rutgers-Newark two shutouts in its last two games. The Scarlet Raiders ripped off five runs in the first frame, featuring a three-run homer off the bat of rookie Julie Contravo. R-N went on to add three more in the second and four in the bottom of the third for the final margin. In the third, all four runs came on a grand slam from senior Morgan Schweitzer.
 
Freshman Paige Massiello was credited with the win in the circle, striking out the six in her three innings of work. She allowed no hits and walked one, and classmate Maranda Jo Shinn tossed the final two frames in the victory. Shinn gave up just one hit and one walk, pocketing one strikeout.

In all, Rutgers-Newark compiled 12 hits, 12 runs and 12 RBI. Freshman Jaclyn Arute went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, senior Morgan Walizer went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and the Contravo/Schweitzer combo that manned first base teamed for two hits, three runs, two home runs and seven RBI. Freshman Sam Morton added two knocks and an RBI for the Raiders and Stiehler had two runs and two walks out of the leadoff spot.
 
Rutgers-Newark 19, Minnesota-Morris 2
The Scarlet Raiders picked up their third-straight inning-shortened victory against Morris, scoring eight runs in the first inning and never looking back.
 
Senior Morgan Walizer notched the win in the circle to improve to 3-0, and Rutgers-Newark scored multiple runs in the first, second, third and fourth frames.
