NEW YORK, N.Y. (March 15, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team was topped by a tough Yeshiva University squad in the 2018 opener for the Scarlet Raiders.
Rutgers-Newark drops to 0-1 on the season, while the Maccabees improve to 4-4. R-N will look to get into the win column Saturday when the Raiders host the College of Staten Island on The Golden Dome Courts.
Yeshiva was able to open a 2-1 lead after doubles play. The Macs took points at Nos. 1 and 2, with the Scarlet Raider pairing of Alan Yu and Vihang Patel pocketing a hard-fought point at No. 3 (8-6).
Patel played a role in both Rutgers-Newark points, winning his match at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (6). It was one of three singles matches to go to a third-set super tiebreaker.
"Overall, I felt it was a pretty competitive match," said Head Coach
Andres Bustani who was coaching the Scarlet Raiders in match action for the first time Thursday. "One of our main goals for the season was to compete in every single match and I think we did that today."
The hosts won 2-of-3 pairings that went to the tiebreak, but the young Raiders acquitted themselves well. Yu lost a tough matchup out of the fifth slot, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6), and so did Kevin Martin at No. 4 (6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (6)).
Brandon Davis won seven games in a 6-3, 6-4 loss out of the top spot as well for Rutgers-Newark.
"There were a lot of positives to take out of tonight's match against a really tough opponent," added Bustani. "We still have a lot of work to do, but I am really pleased with the way everyone performed."
