CVC Preview

NEWARK, N.J. (April 9, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team is back in the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Tournament after a one year hiatus. The Scarlet Raiders are the second seed from the East Division of the CVC and will square off with the East's third seed Ramapo College Tuesday night in The Golden Dome. Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m.

The Scarlet Raiders locked up a spot in the tournament nearly two weeks ago and boast an 18-8 record heading into the postseason after defeating nationally-ranked New York University on Senior Night. The Scarlet Raiders went 7-6 in league play, and split a pair of matches against the Roadrunners during the regular season.

Coach Trevino's Keys to the Match:
-We need to play within ourselves, be patient and try not to over play because it's the postseason.
-It almost goes without saying, but we really need to capitalize on any mistakes Ramapo makes.
-It will be important for us to make them work for their points. We can't give away scores because that's how runs start.
-We need to execute at a high level in all aspects, and we need to make sure any free balls we get are terminated with a point for us.

Rutgers-Newark 3, Ramapo 0 – February 27 – Newark, NJ

Ramapo 3, Rutgers-Newark 2 – April 3 – Mahwah, NJ

The Scarlet Raiders find themselves in the top-30 of a variety of statistical categories as they head into the postseason, none more impressive than a national ranking of No. 13 in opponent hitting percentage (.147). R-N is No. 20 in hitting percentage .246, 21st in winning percentage and 29th in assists per set.

Senior Corey Pieper checks in 16th in the land in points per set and 18th in kills per set, while sophomore Jake Connors is 26th in the country in digs per set. Senior Jalen Sorrell is 29th in D3 in hitting percentage and senior Dom Gutowski is just outside the top-50 in blocks per set.

Seniors Justin Sandy and Ricky Crumlish have been key pieces on both sides of the net for Rutgers-Newark, and setters Arnan Romua and Travis Emenaker will be key pieces to the team's postseason prospects.

The winner of Tuesday night's match will take on Marymount University in the tournament semifinals Friday. The semifinals and final will both take place at Kean University which earned the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament.
