NEWARK, N.J. | The Dolphins of Mt. St. Vincent came in strong off of their win over Lehman College and took down the Scarlet Raiders in straight sets tonight at the Golden Dome, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19).
The Scarlet Raiders (1-2) took on the surging Dolphins of Mt. St. Vincent (2-0) and the Dolphins were able to carry over their momentum from the win over Lehman into tonight's match. Rutgers-Newark and Mt. St. Vincent flip-flopped points for most of the opening set with each team seeing the lead.Â
Rallies were plentiful as both teams passed the ball with ease to set up their teammates for quality attacking looks.
Comfort Akinbo gave the Dolphins' defense trouble with her swings but it was the trio of Tara Maloney, Samantha Schroeder, and Alexandra Madden that did the damage for Mt. St. Vincent. The Dolphins caught fire towards the end of the set and were able to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Dolphins quickly jumped out to an 8-3 lead which prompted Head Coach
Megan Knott to call a timeout to regroup her troops.
Alexa Rivera found her groove and started to exploit the holes in the Dolphins' defense. Rutgers-Newark was able to get within two points, 11-9 before the Dolphins went on a 5-1 run to extend their lead. The run forced the Scarlet Raiders to call a timeout once again to freeze the Dolphins.
The Scarlet Raiders exploded out of the tie out to cut the lead down to two on the back of a trio of Akinbo kills.
Sharon Starling was able to get in on the action as well as
Analis Capobianco was stout on the backline keeping rallies alive for the Scarlet Raiders.Â
Rutgers-Newark looked primed to take the set and even the match at one but the Dolphins would close the door on their comeback and take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 win.Â
After falling behind early in the third set the Scarlet Raiders started to gain momentum and Mt. St. Vincent called a timeout. The timeout would prove useful as the Dolphins would stretch their lead out to 16-12 before Rutgers-Newark called a timeout. The Dolphins maintained the lead for the rest of the set and claimed the match with a 25-19 win.Â
Akinbo and Rivera once again led the way with 13 and eight kills, respectively while
Karly Gregoire paced the team with 26 assists. Capobianco and
Brione Lockett patrolled the end line to the tune of 9 digs each.Â
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Thursday, September 5 where they will take on Pratt at 7:30 pm.Â
