NEWARK, NJ | Andres Medina was the hero tonight, keeping Ramapo off of the scoreboard despite being a man down for a majority of the game. The Scarlet Raiders played out to a 0-0 draw tonight against Ramapo College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) bout at Frederick Douglass Field. The Scarlet Raiders move to 6-3-2, 2-0-2 while Ramapo goes to 5-4-1, 1-2-1.
The Scarlet Raiders and Roadrunners played an evenly matched opening half in tonight's NJAC contest. Rutgers-Newark did put pressure on Ramapo's netminder, Joshua Schaffer, by taking 8 first-half shots, putting two on frame. Franco Catania and Miguel Sencion each had a golden opportunity to put their squad up halfway through the first half, however, Schaffer was able to come up with a save against Sencion to keep the Scarlet Raiders off of the scoreboard.
The defensive unit for the Scarlet Raiders minimalized the opportunities for the Roadrunners as they were held to four shots with none testing Andres Medina.
In the second half, both teams were vying for a goal but were unable to crack the code. In the 57th minute of the game, Marco Menacho was issued a red card which dropped the Scarlet Raiders down to 10 men for the remainder of the game. Ramapo out shot the Scarlet Raiders 15-3 in the second half after being out shot, 8-4, in the first.
As the game wore on, the Scarlet Raiders became comfortable playing a man down and went on the attack and had several opportunities that didn't go their way. Medina was incredible between the pipes for Rutgers-Newark as he made several high difficulty saves to keep his team in the game.
When the game went into extra time, both teams played more cautiously to not give the game as away. With both teams on the defensive, the score would end 0-0 as both teams walked away with a point.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, October 6 when they host Drew University in non-conference action at Frederick Douglass Field.
