Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Rutgers-Newark Athletic Communications

#RUNMSOC Upset By Rutgers-Camden, 2-1, On Senior Night

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team dropped their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game of the season to conference rivals Rutgers University-Camden, 2-1 at Frederick Douglass Field. With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders' 12-game unbeaten streak comes to a close as they move to 11-4-3, 4-1-3 while the Scarlet Raptors improve to 8-7-2, 4-4.

Tonight, the Scarlet Raiders honored their seniors before the game with commemorative pictures. The seniors who were honored tonight were Christian Andrach, Andres Medina, Ahmed Moawad, Anthony Oliviera, Kelvin Opoku, Joshua Breton-Jones, Adonis Scotland, Franco Catania, Christian Nunez, Stanley Lembryk, and Davi Alves

The Scarlet Raiders were more potent of offense this evening, firing off 21 shots with 15 hitting their target, however, they were only able to find the back of the net one time. The Scarlet Raptors took 11 shots but just four found their mark.

Miguel Sencion was aggressive from the first whistle as he tallied three shots in the opening 13 minutes. Sencion continued to test Sean Boen but was unable to pick the lock to find the back of the net. Rutgers-Newark broke the scoring open in the 43rd minute when Catania was fouled inside the 18-yard box and awarded a penalty kick. Catania stepped up and placed the shot into the right side to give him his 17 goals on the season and to tie the school record for career goals with 41.

Rutgers-Newark was unable to hold the lead long in the second half as Rutgers-Camden knotted the game up in the 50th minute off of a set-piece. The Scarlet Raiders continued to put pressure on the Scarlet Raptors, however, tragedy would strike in the 83rd minute. Rutgers-Newark would attempt to clear the ball and saw it go into their net to give Rutgers-Camden a 2-1 lead with just seven minutes remaining.

Once the Scarlet Raptors gained the lead they parked the bus and the Scarlet Raiders were unable to register a shot over the last seven minutes of the game.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is a battle against Montclair in Montclair, NJ with NJAC Tournament implications on the line.
