Rutherford's 2nd Half Eruption Powers #RUNMBB Past York

NEWARK, NJ | Quincy Rutherford erupted for 18 points in the second half, bringing his total to 25, as the Scarlet Raiders defeated York College 82-70 in the opening round of the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic.

Rutgers-Newark (1-0) shot 42.6% from the floor and 46.2% from range and forced 21 turnovers on the defensive end. Abe Kromah was effective on both ends of the court tonight and led the team with three steals and finished with 18 points. Dante Ralph made his presence known in the paint as he recorded three blocks and tallied 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Russell Ayala played well in a reserve role and paced the team with six assists in 17 minutes of action.

Devine Chisholm and Quran Dublin scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, for the Cardinals while Olawele Kila and Guillermo Hernandez added 13 and 11 rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders led by as much as 16 points in the opening half, 24-8, before York stormed all the way back. With 2:38 to go in the first stanza, Chisholm hit a three to give York their first lead of the game before BJ Honis snatched it back with a three-point basket. Kromah would hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe as time expired to give his squad a 42-40 lead heading into the locker room.

Much remained the same to start the second half as the Scarlet Raiders and the Cardinals remained close until the seven-minute mark. This marked the turning point for the Scarlet Raiders as they became red-hot and went on a 15-3 run that burst the game open in their favor. The suffocating defense by the Scarlet Raiders held York to just 10 points in the final 10 minutes of the game.
