#RUNMSOC Fall To Kean In PKs In NJAC Semifinal Round

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team fell in the NJAC semifinal round to Kean University tonight at Frederick Douglass Field in penalty kicks, 3-2.

The Scarlet Raiders earned a bye in the first round after defeating No. 5 Montclair University on the final day of NJAC play. With that win, they earned the No. 2 seed and hosting duties. Kean had to play their way through TCNJ to take on the Scarlet Raiders in the NJAC semifinal.

Rutgers-Newark and Kean clashed in front of a capacity crowd at Frederick Douglass Field and after 110 minutes neither team could be separated by their play on the field as regulation ended 1-1.

The Scarlet Raiders were the first team on the scoreboard when Erick Morales scored a world-class back heel goal to give his team a 1-0 lead. Joe Alba delivered the set-piece into the box and Morales allowed the ball to go through his legs before redirecting it to the far post. Rutgers-Newark kept their foot on the gas and nearly doubled their tally just five minutes after taking a 1-0 lead. Franco Catania saw his shot bounce off of the crossbar which fell to the foot of Juwan Ash who knocked it over the bar.

In the 30th minute, Kean leveled the game at one when Nikolaos Theoudoulidis picked up an errant clearance attempt and stuck it far post. After some quiet with no action, the Scarlet Raiders were awarded a penalty kick which would be saved by Dominic Ridge to keep the Scarlet Raiders from adding another tally to the board. With that miss, the Cougars gained confidence and put pressure on the Scarlet Raiders for the remainder of the game as Rutgers-Newark managed just three shots in the second half after recording 9 in the first.

Kean would fall to 10 men in the first extra time when Gabe Llanos was issued his second yellow of the match. The Cougars hunkered down after that and played for penalty kicks.

Ridge had his confidence at an all-time high heading into the penalty kick shootout and came up with three saves to move the Cougars onto the NJAC Championship game against Rowan University on Saturday.

The men's soccer team will now await to see if they received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament or who they will be playing in the ECAC Tournament.
