Kromah Shines In The Golden Dome Thriller Against William Paterson

NEWARK, NJ | In a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown between Rutgers-Newark and William Paterson, it seemed only fitting that tonight's game turned into an overtime thriller at The Golden Dome.

Abe Kromah played a whopping 43 minutes and scored a career-high 24 points along with 12 rebounds to help Rutgers-Newark (6-2, 3-0) hold off William Paterson (4-2, 2-1), 87-82.

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders shot 43.1% from the floor and 36% from three-point land. Quincy Rutherford added 21 points and six rebounds while BJ Honis and Jordan Salisbury scored 15 and 9 points, respectively.

The Pioneers were led by Domenic Mignone's 17 points on offense and Nick Rodriguez's eight rebounds on defense.

Rutgers-Newark came out of the gates on fire, and jumped out to a 17-9 lead over the Pioneers, however, that wouldn't remain the same as William Paterson eventually found their groove. With 6:09 to go in the first, William Paterson had stretched their lead out to eight points before Kromah swung momentum back in their favor with a quick three-point basket. With under a minute to go, the Scarlet Raiders regained the lead and carried it into the half.

The second half mimicked the first as both teams jockeyed for the lead as neither team was able to pull away. Down three points with 39 seconds to go, Rutherford converted a deep three from Kromah to knot the game up at 73 which electrified the crowd. Down at the other end, Jadon Cepeda was awarded a pair from the charity stripe where he made the first and missed the second, setting the Scarlet Raiders up for a chance to win with the last possession.

Kromah drove to the rim and wasn't able to convert, however, Salisbury pulled down the offensive rebound and was fouled on his way back to the hoop. Salisbury converted his first free-throw before William Paterson called a timeout with three seconds remaining to ice him for his second attempt. Salisbury would go on to miss his second shot to send the game into overtime.

William Paterson came into overtime and went 3-for-3 from the field, however, the Scarlet Raiders were able to match them and keep the Pioneers from running away with the game in overtime. With the game tied at 80, Salisbury gave the Scarlet Raiders the lead with a put-back layup to put his team up for good. Kromah put the nail in the coffin with a rainbow three-point basket with eight seconds left to keep the Scarlet Raiders undefeated in the NJAC.
