Career Highs From Zaleck & Tuohy Propel RUN Past NJCU, 3-1

Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ | The fifth-ranked Rutgers University men's volleyball program picked up right where they left off last season with a dominant 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-17, 25-12) win over New Jersey City University this afternoon at the John J. Moore Athletic & Fitness Center on Sunday.

#5 Rutgers University-Newark (1-0) was led by Andrew Zaleck's career-high 28 kills on an outstanding .641 hit percentage. Adding to his phenomenal afternoon, Zaleck tallied four block assists which tied Daniel Quay for the team lead. Fellow teammate Justin Tuohy also stuffed the stat sheet this afternoon with a career-high 54 assists. Arvind Kumar added 14 kills on 25 attacks while Quay tallied 11 kills. On the defensive side of the ball, Matt Nikishin led his squad with 18 digs, which was also a career-high, were followed by Robert Long's 9. Travis Emenaker did his damage from the service stripe, picking up a pair of service aces in the win.

New Jersey City University (0-2) scored 9 kills from Jonathan Andrews and was led by Christian Ramirezs' .400 hitting percentage. Leo Ferrari recorded 21 assists while Andrews and James Bajor each added two service aces.

The Scarlet Raiders came out on fire in the opening set, securing a 25-13 win. With the hot start, Rutgers-Newark had a 9-2 start early in the first set. Kumar struck while the iron was hot to give his team the lead before a service error ended their run. The Scarlet Raiders kept the foot on the gas which startled the Gothic Knights who were playing their second match of the afternoon. Zaleck continued to pick apart the Gothic Knights as Tuohy consistently placed the ball where it needed to be.

New Jersey City University stunned the Scarlet Raiders in the second set with a 25-23 victory. A combination of 9 attacking errors and seven service errors kept the Gothic Knights in the set and allowed them to eventually steal one from the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark would not make the same mistake they did in the second set again. The Scarlet Raiders once again found their stride as they pummeled the ball into the floor at a torrid pace. The Gothic Knights failed to stop the powerful offense of the Scarlet Raiders for the remainder of the match as Rutgers-Newark went on to win the fourth set and win their first match of the season.

The men's volleyball team returns to action on Sunday, March 7 when they travel to Huntingdon, PA to take on Juniata College for their first conference match of the season.
