NEWARK, NJ | Franco Catania's seven-game scoring streak remained intact tonight after scoring a brace in a 4-1 win over non-conference foes, Centenary University, at Frederick Douglass Field.
As a team, the Scarlet Raiders tallied 29 shots, putting 9 of them on target while holding the Cyclones to just 10 shots with five on target. Catania now sits tied second in the nation with 10 goals on the season while also leading the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
The Scarlet Raiders wasted no time this evening putting goals in the back of the net. Jonah Dias put his team up 1-0 just eight minutes into the game when he was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. Dias used a combination of precision and power to place the ball over the keeper's head for the first goal of his collegiate career. Just two minutes later, the fifth-highest goal scorer in the nation, Franco Catania, stamped his name into the stat sheet. Catania sped down the left flank and beat his defender and placed his shot in the top netting to double his team's lead over the Cyclones.
The offensive onslaught would continue for Rutgers-Newark as Adonis Scotland received a pass from Augusto Bomtempo and curled it past the outstretched keeper for the game's third tally. Catania netted his 10th tally of the season in the 21st minute of the game when Bomtempo slotted a pass inside the box where he hit a low shot to the opposite corner to give him a brace in tonight's non-conference contest.
Rutgers-Newark kept the pressure on as Centenary was unable to get out of their own half for a majority of the first stanza. The Cyclones had to have all 11 men back to defend the wave after wave of attacks from the Scarlet Raiders.
Centenary came out in the second half with a vengeance as they fired off more shots in the first 10 minutes than they did in the entire first half. The aggressiveness would pay dividends 12 minutes into the second half when Brandon Salmon stole the ball along the right flank. Salmon slipped a pass between two defenders to a streaking Yilmaz who was able to put his attempt under Christian Andrach for their first of the game.
Both teams would continue to pressure each other's defensive units but were unable to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, September 25 when they travel down to Glassboro, NJ to take on Rowan University at 7 pm in an NJAC clash.
