Solid Defense Paired With Rutherford's 25 Points Powers #RUNMBB Past TCNJ

NEWARK, NJ | Quincy Rutherford recorded his second straight 25-point outing as the Scarlet Raiders toppled The College of New Jersey, 63-48, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) bout. With the win, the Scarlet Raiders now move into sole possession of first place within the NJAC.

Rutherford scored his 25 on 10-for-21 shooting from the floor and added six rebounds while Jamir Patterson and Dante Ralph added 11 and 10 points, respectively for Rutgers-Newark (10-4, 7-1). Levi Holton, cleaned the boards tonight, recording a team-high 9 rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

The College of New Jersey (5-5, 2-4) was led by Danny Bodine's 12 p pints and 9 rebounds while getting seven points and six assists from Anthony DiCaro.

The Scarlet Raiders came out strong in The Golden Dome against NJAC foes, The College of New Jersey, this evening and held them to 23 points on 27.6% shooting from the floor. The 13th ranked defense was on full display while the Rutgers-Newark offense was firing on all cylinders. Quincy Rutherford led all scorers in the first half with 12 points after finding success inside early on. Offensively, the Scarlet Raiders took care of the ball and turned the ball over just three times in the first half while forcing the Lions into 9.

Rutgers-Newark opened the game with a 24-9 run, however, at the 10-minute mark, TCNJ began to find success which saw them score just two fewer points than the Scarlet Raiders (16-14) over the final 10 minutes of the half. With their strong opening, Rutgers-Newark took a commanding 38-23 lead into the locker room.

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders continued to force TCNJ to take low percentage shots while draining the shot clock on the offensive end. Rutgers-Newark pushed their lead out to 21 off of a Holton jumper with 10:29 to go before TCNJ chipped the lead down to 13 at the 5:43 mark. A layup and a three-point basket by Rutherford further extended their lead as TCNJ was unable to solve the riddle that is the Rutgers-Newark defense.
