Rypkema Goes 4-for-4 as Rutgers-Newark Falls to Curry, 8-1

DAVENPORT, FL | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team opened their RussMatt Invitational spring trip today against Curry College. After taking an early lead, the Scarlet Raiders lost momentum as Curry went on to win, 8-1. 

Rutgers-Newark (5-3) received quality offensive outings from Matthew Rypkema (4-for-4) and Robert Gonzalez (3-for-3) but were unable to score more than one run. As a team, the Scarlet Raiders left 10 runners on the bases while Armando Alvarez tallied the only RBI. Marcus James (1-2) tossed 5.1 innings and allowed six earned runs with four strikeouts. 

Curry (1-0) was led by Peralta who finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Wensley (1-0) pitched 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. 

In the bottom of the first, the Scarlet Raiders used two hits to power in one run. Robert Gonzalez reached first via a walk before Armando Alvarez hit an RBI double to left-center to plate Gonzalez. 

Curry took the lead in the top of the 4th after using two hits to score two runs. Two innings later Curry added five runs on three hits to further extend their lead over the Scarlet Raiders. Curry used a solo homer in the 8th to add another tally to their total to finish the game with an 8-1 victory.
