Heartbreak in Hoboken as Rutgers-Newark Baseball Falls in Walk-Off Fashion to Stevens

HOBOKEN, NJ | Heartbreak in Hoboken as the Rutgers University-Newark baseball team drops a non-conference bout to Stevens via a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th, 9-8.

Robert Gonzalez led the Scarlet Raiders (8-5) at the dish, finished 4-for-5 with three runs while Armando Alvarez (2-for-5) and Ryan Lebow (2-for-4) each finished with 2 RBIs. Chris Suleski tallied one less hit than Gonzalez, going 3-for-4 with two runs and a walk. Daniel Reardon got the start on the mound and pitched 5.2 innings with five strikeouts and six earned runs. However, it was Alex Cuoto (1-1) who got the decision after allowing the go-ahead run. As a team, the Scarlet Raiders scattered 16 hits and played a clean game in the field with no errors.

Stevens (13-6) used 10 hits to score 9 runs while being led by Ryan Wall. Wall went a perfect, 3-for-3 from the dish with six RBIs while Thomas Paulich also finished with three hits. Michael Reyes (1-1) pitched to four batters and picked up the win for the Ducks.

The Ducks were on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, using three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. It was Wall who hit a three-run homer to get Stevens started. Rutgers-Newark got their offense going in the top of the 4th when they scored two runs to cut their deficit down to just one.

Gonzalez got the inning started with a single through the right side before Alvarez brought him home with an RBI double to right field. Suleski registered the third straight hit for Rutgers-Newark with an infield single. Wasting no time, Suleski put himself in scoring position by stealing second base which allowed Lebow to record a sacrifice fly for the second run of the inning.

Rutgers-Newark took the lead in the top of the 6th with another pair of runs. An error by the Ducks advanced Suleski to home and Lebow to third to set up the go-ahead run. Jamir Ramos found a gap in center field to score Lebow to briefly take the lead on the road.

Stevens answered with three runs in the bottom of the 6th, however, the Scarlet Raiders' offense wasn't finished yet. Rutgers-Newark took a one-run lead in the 7th after scoring three runs powered by Lebow, Anthony Ricardo, and Matthew Rypkema singles.

In the top of the 8th, the Scarlet Raiders gave their lead a cushion by adding one run to their mark to set up what would be a heartbreaking conclusion to the game.

With no outs in the bottom of the 9th and down two runs, Wall secured his second three-run homer of the game to lift Stevens past Rutgers-Newark in walk-off fashion.
