Rutgers-Newark Baseball Unable to Overcome Stevens, 7-5

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team had their two-game win streak come to a close this afternoon when they fell 7-5 to Stevens Institute of Technology at Weequahic Park.

The Scarlet Raiders (10-6) scattered 9 hits in the loss and committed a pair of errors. Jon Rosado put a claim in for NJAC Rookie of the Week after finishing 2-for-3 with 3 RBI in the loss. Lisandro Ulerio went 2-for-5 with an RBI while Eric Recchia and Jesse Evensen each finished with a pair of hits. Vince Taylor (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs.

Stevens (16-7) used 13 hits to plate seven runs while Thomas Paulich finished a perfect 5-for-5 with an RBI. Evan Provato went 2-for-4 at the plate to round out the multiple hit players. Justin Doyle picked up the win for the Ducks with a strikeout.

The Ducks benefited from an error in the first inning, allowing them to plate the opening run of the game. After plating two more runs in the top of the second, Rutgers-Newark answered with a pair of their own to cut the lead down to one. Rosado stepped to the plate and hit 2 RBI double to left field to score both Eric Recchia and Chris Suleski

Rutgers-Newark took hold of the lead in the bottom of the 4th when Rosado hit another double, this time scoring Recchia. Rosado wouldn't have to wait on the bases long as Ulerio hit a line drive to the outfield for an RBI single. Three innings later, Stevens regained the lead with a three-run inning before adding another to their tally in the 9th.

The Scarlet Raiders had a chance to tie the game up in the bottom of the 9th after Armando Alvarez picked up an RBI double to cut the lead down to two. With both runners in scoring position, the Scarlet Raiders recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
