Rutgers-Newark Baseball Falls to No. 16 Kean University

UNION, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders baseball team went into extra innings with No. 16 Kean University in game one of today's New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) but found themselves on the wrong side of the final score, 1-0. In game two the Scarlet Raiders were unable to keep Kean's bats at bay as they fell, 19-1.

Game 1: Kean 1, Rutgers-Newark 0

Colin Thomson pitched a gem on the mound for the Scarlet Raiders (12-13, 2-7), hurling eight scoreless innings with four strikeouts and just five hits. Lisandro Ulerio and Jamir Ramos led the team with two hits each as the Scarlet Raiders scattered seven as a team.

Kean (25-6, 8-1) was led by Collin Kiernan (8-0) on the mound. He pitched a complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts and seven hits. Gianni Marano tallied the lone RBI for the Cougars while Michael Lapczynski and Kyle Adorno picked up two hits each.

The Scarlet Raiders and Cougars entered a pitcher's duel in game one with just one run needing to be scored to take the victory. Rutgers-Newark had a chance to up early on Kean in the first inning after Ulerio hit a lead-off double before moving over to third where he would be stranded.

In the 7th, the Scarlet Raiders would be presented with a runner on 3rd once more, this time in Chris Suleski. Jon Rosado and Ryan Lebow were unable to get their hits into the gaps as they would both be thrown out at first to end the inning and keep Rutgers-Newark off of the scoreboard.

Tragedy struck for the Scarlet Raiders in the bottom of the 10th when a throwing error allowed the game-winning run to score for Kean.

Game 2: Kean 19, Rutgers-Newark 1

The Scarlet Raiders (12-14, 2-8) were held to just four hits in game two. Dario Morales, Gianmarco Acevedo, Robert Gonzalez, and Lisandro Ulerio recorded the four hits for the Scarlet Raiders in the loss. On the mound, Liam Winslow (2-2) was given the decision after three innings after striking out two batters and allowing seven hits.

Kean (26-6, 9-1) used 18 hits to score 19 runs in game two. Dylan Beyer finished 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs while Phil Marcantonio was 4-for-6 with 2 RBIs.

After a scoreless first inning, the Cougars opened the game with seven runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Kean then added six more runs spread over three innings.

Rutgers-Newark opened their scoring ledger in the top of the 8th when Nathaniel Nunez scored when Angelo Mascolo grounded out to the shortstop.

Kean responded with six runs in the bottom of the stanza to further increase their lead.
