Baseball Falls Short Against Ramapo

NEWARK, NJ | A late surge by the Scarlet Raiders brought them within four of the Roadrunners, however, they were unable to complete the comeback as Ramapo halted the rally with a 7-4 victory in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play.

The Scarlet Raiders (12-16, 2-10) scattered seven hits and committed three errors and were led by Chris Suleski at the dish. Suleski finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss while Dario Morales, Matthew Rypkema and Tony Liggio each added an RBI. On the mound, Dan Greene (3-2) hurled five innings and struck out three batters while allowing seven hits.

Ramapo (13-17-1, 5-7) completed the season sweep of the Scarlet Raiders  with 9 hits and no errors in the field. Christian Alonso led the Roadrunners with four hits and 2 RBIs while Matt Lalomia also picked up a pair of RBIs. Dan Russo (4-1) almost recorded a complete game with eight innings pitched and six strikeouts.

The Roadrunners plated runs early and often in the opening two stanza's to take a 4-0 lead over the Scarlet Raiders. A lead-off double by Alonso set up Ciani to bring him home in the very next at-bat to quickly put Ramapo up, 1-0.

In the second, Ramapo doubled their tally with another pair of runs to take a 4-0 lead. Rutgers-Newark ended their scoreless drought in the bottom of the 4th when Eric Recchia singled through the left side which moved Jamir Ramos over to 2nd. With Ramos in scoring position Suleski hit a long ball into left field to scored Ramos.

Ramapo scored two more runs in the top the 5th before plating their final run in the top of the 8th.

With their backs against the wall, Rutgers-Newark put together a rally that nearly deleted their deficit. Morales got the rally started for the Scarlet Raiders with an RBI single through the right side before both Rypkema and Anthony Ricardo found that same gap to score runs. The rally came to a close when Lisandro Ulerio flew out to end the game.
