RUN Baseball Topples NJCU in High-Scoring Affair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team battled it out with New Jersey City University today in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown and came out on top, 18-11.

The Scarlet Raiders (13-18, 3-12) used 18 runs on 18 hits and committed two errors in the high-scoring affair against the Gothic Knights. Eric Recchia, Chris Suleski, and Matthew Rypkema led the way with three hits each while Lisandro Ulerio paced the team with 3 RBIs. On the mound, Daniel Reardon (3-3) pitched five innings and struck out three batters and allowed 10 hits.

For NJCU (12-24, 3-12) it was Ricky Voss who led the way with four hits and 2 RBIs. Paul Tannucilli (1-2) went 5.2 innings with five strikeouts.

Rutgers-Newark opened their scoring ledger in the bottom of the 3rd when Jamir Ramos singled through the right side to plate Ulerio. The Gothic Knights then took the lead in the 4th with three runs before the Scarlet Raiders opened the flood gates and scored seven runs to take the lead.

Recchia started the Scarlet Raiders off with a single to center field, starting a run of five-straight singles which plated a pair of runs. Jesse Evensen brought the hits back to bring Armando Alvarez home before an error allowed Ulerio to reach first. The Scarlet Raiders would bat around where Recchia would collect another single and an RBI.

Rutgers-Newark went dormant in the 5th while NJCU added three more to their tally. The Scarlet Raiders, however, added another six to the scoreboard in the 6th to further stretch their lead.

The Scarlet Raiders would score four more runs in the 7th and 8th to close out the game with an 18-11 win.
