Men's Basketball Offense Stalls in 2nd Half and Falls to TCNJ on the Road

EWING, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team fell to The College of New Jersey on the road, 59-56, after TCNJ scored 40 points in the second half. With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders fell to 4-11, 2-6 while TCNJ improved to 4-11, 3-5.

Tony Godwin paced the Scarlet Raiders with 17 points while Levi Holton added 11 of his own. Travis Miles grabbed a team-high five rebounds while Godwin added four steals and four assists.

The Scarlet Raiders fell behind 10-2 early on before Jordan Salisbury knotted the game up with 8:55 to go in the first half. Godwin pushed their lead out to seven with 4:43 remaining after he cashed in on a long range basket. TCNJ found the bottom of the net to cut the lead down to five, however, Godwin drained his shot from behind the arc to send the Scarlet Raiders into the half with an eight point lead.

In the second half, the Lions and Scarlet Raiders flip flopped the lead for the first eight minutes before Rutgers-Newark grabbed control of the game. With a six point lead the Scarlet Raiders saw that dwindle as TCNJ tied it up at 49 before Russell Ayala hit a three to put his squad back in front. With 2:13 remaining on the clock Godwin put Rutgers-Newark ahead by one, but their offense stalled there as TCNJ made a pair of layups over the final minute of play to complete the comeback.
