#10 Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Lasell

NEWTON, MA | #10 Rutgers-Newark split their tri-match this afternoon to go 1-1 on the day. The Scarlet Raiders opened the day with a 3-1 win over Regis before falling to hosts Lasell, 3-1, for their first loss of the season. Rutgers-Newark moves to 4-1 overall while Lasell improves to 4-0. Regis moved to 1-4 with the pair of losses.

Match 1: #10 Rutgers-Newark 3, Regis 1 (25-14, 25-22, 25-12, 25-16)

Daniel Quay powered the Scarlet Raiders past the Pride with 10 kills while Aidan Apito and Andrew Zaleck added 9 each. Derek Au led the way with 39 assists and 11 digs. Quay continues to be a menace at the net, defensively, as he tallied five total blocks, four of which were solo.

After the Scarlet Raiders and Pride traded points in the opening set, Rutgers-Newark used a 7-1 run led by Quay and Martin Chromulak. With a 15-8 lead, the nationally ranked Scarlet Raiders, continued to build off of that lead to comfortably take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Regis bounced back in the second set to level the match at one. After trailing for a majority of the set, the Scarlet Raiders rallied back and knotted the set up at 16. A pair of errors by the Pride bumped the Scarlet Raiders into the lead, however, they were unable to hold onto that lead as Regis recorded three kills down the stretch to secure a win and tie the match at one.

With the match knotted at one, the Scarlet Raiders returned to form in the third set and recorded their highest hit percentage of the match (.550). Zaleck and the Scarlet Raiders came out strong in the third set as he tallied three kills on the 10-2. Regis tried to rally back and cut the lead down to 17-11 but the Scarlet Raiders ended the set on an 8-1 run to go up 2-1 in the match.

Much like the third set, the Scarlet Raiders benefited from a powerful start which they carried all the way until the end of the set to remain undefeated on the year.

Match 2: Lasell 3, #10 Rutgers-Newark 1 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20)

Tuohy led the team with 32 assists while Zaleck tallied a team-high 19 kills. Chromulak secured five block assists while Matt Nikishin recorded 13 digs.

Rutgers-Newark opened their second match of the day with a 4-1 run against Lasell. The Lasers quickly tied it up before the Scarlet Raiders could run away with the set. Aidan Apito gave the Scarlet Raiders their largest lead of the set (5), after he secured the kill to put his team up 11-6.  For the remainder of the set, the Scarlet Raiders kept Lasell at arms length to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

A kill by Apito late in the second set brought the Scarlet Raiders within one before Lasell ripped off three straight points to put them within five of the win. Rutgers-Newark responded with a 3-1 run but it wasn't enough to make up the difference as the Lasers tied the match at one with a service ace by Theo Zaharawicz.

In the third, Lasell looked to be running away with the set, up 16-11, but Zaleck and Chromulak quickly made up that difference. Much like the second set, Lasell used a 3-0 run to put them in the drivers seat for good, despite a pair of kills by Tuohy towards the end of the set.

The Scarlet Raiders found themselves in unfamiliar territory in the 4th set as they were down 2-1 in the match. Rutgers-Newark held a 10-8 lead before the Lasers took control of the set with a 6-2 run. The 10th ranked team in the nation wouldn't go down without a fight as they took advantage of three errors and a pair of kills to jump ahead 20-17. It looked as if the Scarlet Raiders were set to push the match into a 5th and final set, however, Lasell had other plans and slammed the door shut on the Scarlet Raiders after they scored eight unanswered points.
