Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Springfield, 71-64

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's basketball squad suffered an opening night loss, 71-64, to Springfield College in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (0-1) was led offensively by Travis Miles, Ayden Brown, and Preston Brown who all scored 14 points. Defensively, Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd registered a team-high six rebounds and four steals. Springfield (1-1) won the battle on the boards, edging out the Scarlet Raiders 52-33. Gary Bess paced the team with 13 points and Curtiss Blische led the way with 13 rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders' offense got off to a slow start against the Pride from Springfield College. Rutgers-Newark fell behind 7-0 to start the game before Levi Holton converted a layup to break their scoreless spell. Travis Miles brought the Scarlet Raiders within one before they eventually tied the game at 14 behind a Kelvin Marshall free-throw. Over the next three minutes, Springfield would extend their lead behind a 12-0 run. Miles put the Scarlet Raiders back on the board with a pair of free throws which sparked the offense. Shortly after, Ayden Brown cashed in on a driving layup which put him at the charity stripe where he converted the and-one, bringing the Scarlet Raiders within seven.

Rutgers-Newark's defense began to shut down the Pride while Ayden Brown and Preston Brown propped up the Scarlet Raiders' offense and brought them within four with three minutes to go in the first half. Springfield was able to take advantage of the Scarlet Raiders' turnovers which turned into a 10-point lead at the break.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders' offense began to heat up which allowed them to remain within striking distance of the Pride. Jamir Patterson cashed in a part from the free throw line before Miles made a layup to cut the lead down to 9. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd's quick hands brought Rutgers-Newark within three with 2:39 to go after he forced a turnover that sent him to the line. Despite the surge late, the Scarlet Raiders couldn't overcome their deficit and will now play in the John K. Adams Consolation game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
