Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to Arcadia, 65-64

NEWARK, NJ | Heartbreak at The Golden Dome as the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball squad dropped a non-conference bout to Arcadia University, 65-64, on New Year's Eve.

Rutgers-Newark (6-7) was led by Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd's 16 points and Kelvin Marshall's six rebounds. Russell Ayala added 14 points in the loss and added a pair of assists. Arcadia (7-4) shot 46% from the floor and 46.7% from three-point range in the win. Josh Parks paced the Knights with 20 points while Jalen Watkins led the team with 11 rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders' offense was shot out of a cannon in the opening minutes of the game, as they used their speed to create openings and hop in front. Six minutes into the game, Rutgers-Newark held an 11-6 lead behind four points from Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd and a trio from Russell Ayala. Rutgers-Newark's offense would stall at 11 which opened the door for Arcadia to take the lead via an 11-2 run. Preston Brown broke the dry spell for the Scarlet Raiders with a pull-up jumper with 10 minutes remaining in the first to bring his squad within four of Arcadia.

Rutgers-Newark overcame their shooting struggles early in the first half and took a one-point deficit into the break.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders found their stride offensively and with eight minutes to go tied the game up at 55 behind stout defense and strong interior play. Jenkins-Floyd put the Scarlet Raiders ahead, 58-57 after a quality defensive stand led to a fast break layup. With 1:54 remaining, Ayala increased the Scarlet Raiders' lead to five with a baseline jumper, however, that would be the final point for the Scarlet Raiders. A layup and a pair of free throws by Parks put Arcadia down one before they would score the eventual game-winning point with 9 seconds left. Jenkins-Floyd and Marshall each had a chance to give the Scarlet Raiders the win but were denied by the rim.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, January 6 where they will host NJCU at 6:00 p.m.
