#15 Men's Volleyball Set to Participate in IVHF Morgan Classic

NEWARK, NJ | The #15 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team will participate in the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic Tournament on Friday, February 10, and Saturday, February 11 held at Springfield College.

The International Volleyball Hall of Fame's Morgan Classic is the premier annual four-team men's collegiate tournament on the East Coast. The format of the tournament has seen many changes over the years.  Beginning in 1972 as the William G. Morgan Memorial Volleyball Tournament, the event featured eight YMCA/Club teams from throughout the Northeast United States and Montreal Canada. In 1988, the tournament featured a women's professional single match between the Los Angeles Starlites and the New York Liberties. The 1989 Classic featured a two-team men's collegiate match between Ohio State and Penn State. In 1990, the current four-team format began with San Diego State capturing the Classic title at Holyoke High School, the site of the first three Classics. The Classic moved to Springfield College in 1991 and has continued to feature some of the top NCAA teams in the country.

The Scarlet Raiders will open the tournament against #11 New York University (NYU) at 6:00 pm. In the seven meetings between the Scarlet Raiders and the Violets, Rutgers-Newark is 10-5 all-time but have won the last two meetings in 2018 and 2022. This will be the 8th time the Scarlet Raiders have participated in the IVHF and the first since 2007. In the seven appearances in the tournament, the Scarlet Raiders have made the championship match three times with one win. The lone championship win came in 1998 where the Scarlet Raiders defeated Springfield, 3-1.
