Softball Drops Opening Twinbill in Naples, FL

NAPLES, FL | The Rutgers University-Newark softball squad dropped their season opening twinbill on Monday afternoon. In game one they fell to Emerson 19-3 before losing a close game, 6-5, against SUNY Brockport. The Scarlet Raiders dropped to 0-2 to start their season.

Game 1: Emerson 19, Rutgers-Newark 3

In their first action of the season, the Scarlet Raiders struggled on both ends as they fell 19-3 at the Gene Cusic Tournament. Alex Di Martino and Michelle McMillan tallied two and one hits, respectively, while McMillan crossed the dish a team-high two times.

After responding to Emerson's run in the bottom of the frame, Emerson added a pair of runs to go up 3-1. The game unraveled for the Scarlet Raiders in the top of the 3rd when Emerson tallied 9 runs to take a 12-1 lead.

Emerson added seven more runs over the next two innings before the Scarlet Raiders plated two runs behind the bats of Di Martino and Gabriela Forese.

Game 2: SUNY Brockport 6, Rutgers-Newark 5

Michelle McMillan, Alex Di Martino, and Gabriela Forese all recorded two hits and an RBI in their second game of the day. McMillan used her speed to score two runs for the Scarlet Raiders, good for a team-high. In the circle, Madison DiGiorgio (0-1) hurled 6.1 innings and allowed 12 hits and six runs with one strikeout.

The Scarlet Raiders opened the game with a two-run inning behind the bats of Di Martino and Forese as they each tallied an RBI single. SUNY Brockport responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to cut their deficit down to one. Rutgers-Newark one-upped themselves in the second stanza by plating three more runs to take a 5-1 lead. A wild pitch got the scoring started for the Scarlet Raiders as Amanda Panaro crossed the dish. McMillan followed that up with a single up the middle which brought home Alexis Claiborne before another wild pitch crossed McMillan.

Brockport brought themselves within one in the bottom of the 6th before scoring two in the bottom of the 7th to steal a win away from the Scarlet Raiders.
