Rutgers-Newark Softball Splits Against SUNY Delhi and Mitchell College

NAPLES, FL | The Scarlet Raiders softball squad split their doubleheader this afternoon against SUNY Dehli and Mitchell College. Rutgers-Newark won their opening game of the day with a 3-2 win over SUNY Dehli before falling in game two, 2-1. The split moves the Scarlet Raiders to 1-3 on the year.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, SUNY Dehli 2

Josephine Morales led the Scarlet Raiders with two hits and two RBIs in the game while Alex Di Martino also finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Madison DiGiorgio (1-2) earned her first win and allowed two runs on 11 hits.

The Scarlet Raiders were first to the scoreboard, recording a run in the bottom of the first inning. Di Martino reached first via a single and eventually moved to second with two outs on the board. Morales hit a line drive up the middle to score Di Martino from second and put the Scarlet Raiders up 1-0. Two innings later, the Broncos evened the game by scoring a run of their own. In the same frame, the Scarlet Raiders retook the lead after Destiny Maury hit an RBI single to center field to once again score Di Martino.

The Broncos would go on to tie it up once more, but just as they did in the 3rd inning, the Scarlet Raiders matched the Broncos and held on to their one-run lead.

Game 2: Mitchell 2, Rutgers-Newark 1

In the second game of the day, the Scarlet Raiders used three hits by McMillan, Di Martino and Mia Lopez to score one run. Madison Umlauf (0-1) got the start in the circle and pitched six innings with one earned run and one strikeout.

Mitchell scored the first run of the game after four scoreless innings, capitalizing on an error to plate their run. Di Martino responded with a single to center field to score Lopez and even the game up. The game wouldn't remain that way for long as Mitchell also scored in the same inning and hold their 2-1 lead until the end.
