McMillan Hits Walk-Off Triple in Game 2 to Help the Scarlet Raiders Split The Day

NAPLES, FL | The Rutgers University-Newark split on Thursday in electric fashion, falling by one run, 7-6, to Wisconsin-Superior before McMillan hit a walk-off 3 RBI triple to secure the 7-5 win over SUNY Cobleskill. The split improved the Scarlet Raiders to 2-4 on the year.

Game 1: Wisconsin-Superior 7, Rutgers-Newark 6

Alex Di Martino, Josephine Morales, and Keelin O'Brien recorded two hits for the Scarlet Raiders in the narrow loss to Wisconsin-Superior. O'Brien plated four runs for Rutgers-Newark with a career-high four RBIs. Madison DiGiorgio got the start in the circle for the Scarlet Raiders and allowed six runs on six hits while Madison Umlauf (0-2) allowed one run on one hit and was given the decision.

Rutgers-Newark got off to a hot start, scoring five runs in the opening frame. Megan Tomaselli got the scoring going for the Scarlet Raiders when she brought home Michelle McMillan who walked to start the inning. The Scarlet Raiders would go on to load the bases before O'Brien hit a bases clearing double to extend their lead to 4-0. Alexis Claiborne added another tally before the inning came to a close.

Wisconsin-Superior matched the Scarlet Raiders with five runs in the bottom of the frame to erase the solid start by Rutgers-Newark.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd with an RBI triple by Young to take a 6-5 lead. O'Brien leveled the game two innings later with her 4th RBI of the game when she plated Morales.

After a scoreless 6th inning, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to plate any runs in the top of the 7th which set up the Yellow Jackets to win the game on an error.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 7, SUNY Cobleskill 5 (8 inn.)

The second game of the morning needed extra innings to be decided with an electric finish. McMillan finished the game with a team-high 3 RBIs while Alison Miller led the team with a pair of hits. Madison Umlauf (1-2) picked up her first win of the season with five strikeouts.

SUNY Cobleskill put the first run on the scoreboard in the top of the 2nd, however, the Scarlet Raiders responded in the next inning to even the game at one. Freshman catcher, Gabriela Forese found a gap in center field for an RBI double which gave the Scarlet Raiders their first run of the game.

The game would remain scoreless until the top of the 8th when the Tigers would capitalize on an error by the Scarlet Raiders to keep the inning alive. Down four with two outs Rutgers-Newark had their backs against the wall, however, that's when the Scarlet Raiders struck gold. Miller hit a 2 RBI single to plate two runs and bring the Scarlet Raiders within two before Claiborne plated another run. Tomaselli struck out, however, a passed ball allowed her to safely reach first to load the bases and set up McMillan for the potential win.

McMillan did not waste her opportunity as she hit a 3 RBI triple to right field for the walk-off win and the Scarlet Raiders' second win of the season.
