O'Brien's Red Hot Bat Helps #RUNSB End Spring Trip With a Win

NAPLES, FL | The Scarlet Raiders softball program ended their Spring Trip at the Gene Cusic Classic this morning with a split against Western Conn and Westfield State. The Scarlet Raiders fell 3-0 in the opening game of the day to Western Conn before bouncing back with a 7-3 win over Westfield State.

Game 1: Western Conn. 3, Rutgers-Newark 0

The Scarlet Raiders dropped the opening game of their final doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic this morning, falling 3-0 to Western Conn.

Rutgers-Newark (2-5) scattered three hits and recorded one error as Western Conn (10-5) used 10 hits to plate three runs.

The Wolves plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the opening frame before adding their two insurance runs four innings later in the bottom of the 5th.

Rutgers-Newark looked to get their bats going in the top of the 2nd when Megan Tomaselli led off with a single to left field. The Wolves, however, would turn two after Gabriela Forese grounded into a double play. The Scarlet Raiders' best opportunity to score came in the top of the 6th when Michelle McMillan hit a two-out triple which immediately put her in scoring position. Alex Di Martino would get hit by a pitch before Josephine Morales would walk to load the bases. After recording the first hit for her squad in the 2nd, Tomaselli ended the inning on a fly out to right field.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 7, Westfield State 3

Rutgers-Newark (3-5) plated seven runs on six hits to knock down Westfield State (5-5), 7-3.

The Scarlet Raiders struck first courtesy of a 2 RBI single to right field by Morales, plating both Di Martino and McMillan. Rutgers-Newark poured it on in the 4th inning with five runs on three hits. The outburst began when both Marissa Houseknecht and Alexis Claiborne reached via base on balls before advancing into scoring position via a wild pitch. Eliana Cedeno came to the dish as a pinch hitter and didn't disappoint as she hit an RBI single to ignite the explosive inning.

With two outs, Keelin O'Brien picked up where she left off yesterday and hit a 3 RBI double to further increase the Scarlet Raiders' lead. O'Brien, who leads the Scarlet Raiders with 7 RBIs, wouldn't be stranded on the bases for long as Morales brought her home in short order with an RBI single.

The Owls did all of their damage in the top of the 5th where they scored three runs on two hits. Madison DiGiorgio replaced Umlauf in the circle and recorded the final two outs of the inning to preserve their lead. Both teams' bats would go cold in the final two innings as the Scarlet Raiders hung on to secure their third win of the season.
