Softball Stumbles Against Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders softball program played their first doubleheader of the season on New Jersey soil this afternoon against Centenary. The Cyclones took both games to set the Scarlet Raiders back to 3-7 with 13-5, 7-6 wins. Centenary University improved to 5-9 with the wins.

Game 1: Centenary 13, Rutgers-Newark 5 (5 inn.)

Josephine Morales was a perfect 3-for-3 from the dish in the opening game with a pair of RBIs while Alex Di Martino and Kellin O'Brien each added two hits and an RBI. In the circle, Madison Umlauf hurled three innings and allowed 11 hits and 10 runs with one strikeout.

The Cyclones opened the game with a trio of runs on four hits to start their scoring spree. The Scarlet Raiders would cut the lead down to 4-2 in the top of the third when Di Martino tripled to right field before promptly being brought home by O'Brien. O'Brien wouldn't have to wait on the bases long as Morales copied Di Martino with a triple to right.

Centenary would go on to score 9 runs across three innings while allowing the Scarlet Raiders to plate just three more runs which ended the game in five innings.

Game 2: Centenary 7, Rutgers-Newark 6

Michelle McMillan paced the team, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs in the second game while Di Martino, O'Brien, and Marissa Houseknecht added two hits each. Umlauf (2-4) was given the decision after pitching 1.2 innings and allowing two earned runs.

McMillan started game two with a single to center field before using her speed to steal second base. Di Martino continues to bring a consistent bat to the plate and singled to center field to score McMillan from second.   After Alexis Claiborne and Houseknecht reached via singles, McMillan hit a 2 RBI single to put the Scarlet Raiders out in front, 3-0.

Centenary answered with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd, however, the Scarlet Raiders responded two innings later with three in the top of the 5th. Trailing by three runs, the Cyclones responded with three over the 5th and 6th before plating the winning run in the bottom of the 7th via an error.
