Softball Splits Non-Conference Bout With Hunter

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball squad split their doubleheader with Hunter College this afternoon, 7-0, 8-3. With the split, the Scarlet Raiders moved to 4-8 while the Hawks also laterally moved to 3-11.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 7, Hunter 0

The Scarlet Raiders scattered seven hits and plated seven runs in game one. Kayla Cardozo was perfect from the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Alex Di Martino recorded two RBIs while Madison DiGiorgio (2-3) hurled seven innings and allowed four hits with five strikeouts.

Keelin O'Brien used a sacrifice fly in the opening frame to plate McMillan who hit a lead-off triple. The Scarlet Raiders doubled their lead in the 2nd when Di Martino used her patience at the plate to earn an RBI walk. Rutgers-Newark was held scoreless in the 3rd before adding another run to their tally in the bottom of the 4th.

Rutgers-Newark took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the 6th to plate four runs to stretch their lead out to 7-0 before the final inning of play. DiGiorgio continued her solid outing from the circle and shutdown the Hawks as the Scarlet Raiders completed the shutout.

Game 2: Hunter 8, Rutgers-Newark 3

Josephine Morales tallied two of the Scarlet Raiders' seven hits in the second game and led the team with two RBIs. In the circle, Madison Umlauf (2-5) pitched 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs on 9 hits with three strikeouts.

The Hawks plated their three runs in the top of the 2nd before the Scarlet Raiders responded an inning later. Morales doubled down the right field line to score O'Brien and McMillan before Gabriela Forese reached on a fielding error which brought home Morales.

The flood gates opened in the 4th as the Hawks plated five runs behind five hits to jump in front 8-3. Rutgers-Newark was unable to replicate their success from game one as they dropped the non-conference bout against Hunter.
