Powerful Bats Cruise Rutgers-Newark Past Brooklyn in Non-Conference Doubleheader

NEWARK, NJ | Michelle McMillan led the Scarlet Raiders past Brooklyn College in this afternoon's non-conference twin bill with five combined RBIs, 17-1, 16-0. The wins boosted the Scarlet Raiders to 6-8 on the year while the Bulldogs fell to 3-8.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 17, Brooklyn 1 (5 inn.)

McMillan finished 2-for-4 from the dish with a team-high 4 RBIs while Megan Tomaselli added a hit and 3 RBIs. Alison Miller tallied 2 RBIs and two hits alongside Alex Di Martino who also picked up a pair of hits. In the circle, Madison DiGiorgio hurled five innings and tallied four strikeouts and one earned run.

Brooklyn tallied their lone run in the opening stanza, using the Scarlet Raiders' lone error to plate the run. Tomaselli then responded with a sacrifice fly RBI to score Di Martino before Josephine Morales hit a double to the gap in right-center to score Keelin O'Brien. Rutgers-Newark tallied another run in the 2nd when Alexis Claiborne found the plate when McMillan grounded out to the pitcher.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Scarlet Raiders plated 12 runs, using eight hits and two errors to do so. O'Brien set the tempo with a lead-off triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Gabriela Forese and Miller used singles to load the bases which allowed another run to score via an error by the center fielder. McMillan found room in right-center for a double and was quickly brought home by a Di Martino triple.

After the flood gates opened in the 3rd, the Scarlet Raiders scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, led by an inside the park home run by McMillan, before shutting down the Bulldogs in the top of the 5th to end the game in five innings.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 16, Brooklyn 0 (5 inn.)

Marissa Houseknecht was a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs in game two while O'Brien and Morales each tallied 3 RBIs. Madison Umlauf struck out 9 batters in five innings and allowed just two hits.

The Scarlet Raiders' bats remained hot in game two and quickly put up five runs in the opening frame. Forese picked up two of her RBIs, bringing home Di Martino and O'Brien, with a single through the left side, allowing Houseknecht to clean up the rest of the pillows with a single up the middle.

A run in the bottom of the 2nd set up the Scarlet Raiders for another explosive 3rd inning. In the previous game the Scarlet Raiders scored 12 runs in the 3rd inning and in game two they scored 10 runs. Amanda Panaro doubled down the right field line to score Houseknecht. O'Brien then hit a 3 RBI double setting up Morales to hit her first career home run over the left field fence. The 10-run inning pushed the Scarlet Raiders' lead out to 16-0, enough to initiate the mercy rule and end the game in five innings.
