Rutgers-Newark Softball Unable to Overcome Stockton

GALLOWAY, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders softball squad were unable to overcome Stockton in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader, 12-0, 8-3. The pair of losses dropped the Scarlet Raiders down to 7-15, 1-7 while Stockton improved to 13-13, 5-3. 

Game 1: Stockton 12, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 inn.)

The Scarlet Raiders were held to two hits in the opening game of this afternoons NJAC doubleheader against the Ospreys. Alex Di Martino and Marissa Houseknecht each recorded a double in the loss. In the circle, Madison DiGiorgio (4-7) suffered her 7th loss of the year in two innings of action after give up eight earned runs on 12 hits. 

Stockton broke the game open in the bottom of the first inning, plating five runs on seven hits. The Ospreys continued their torrid scoring in the next from with a 3 RBI homer by James. After the second inning, the Scarlet Raiders' offense was shut down as they were unable to find another hit the rest of the game. 

With the mercy rule already active, Stockton added three more runs in the 4th to secure the win. 

Game 2: Stockton 8, Rutgers-Newark 3

The Scarlet Raiders' bats came alive in game two and scattered seven hits as a squad. Kayla Cardozo finished the game 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. In the circle, Madison Umlauf (3-7) allowed 12 hits with one strikeout. 

Stockton was once again first to the scoreboard, tallying two runs in the bottom of the 2nd. The Ospreys increased their marker with three more in the 4th. Rutgers-Newark responded in the top of the 5th with three runs. Cardozo was the catalyst for the Scarlet Raiders as she hit a 2 RBI double to left center to score Alison Miller and Gabriella Almario. Michelle McMillan wouldn't let Cardozo hang around on the bases for long as she drove her home with an RBI double. 

The Ospreys shut the Scarlet Raiders out in the top of the 6th before adding to their tally to increase their lead back to five which they held until the end of the game.
