Softball Suffers a Pair of Losses to Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA | The Rutgers-Newark softball program suffered a pair of non-conference losses this afternoon to Immaculata, 8-7, 14-6. The losses drop the Scarlet Raiders to 7-17 while Immaculata improved to 10-13.

Game 1: Immaculata 8, Rutgers-Newark 7

Alison Miller finished 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs while Keelin O'Brien and Megan Tomaselli tallied three hits each. Madison Umlauf (3-9) pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits.

Alex Di Martino got the Scarlet Raiders on the board early with a solo home run. O'Brien followed that up with a single before advancing to 2nd on a wild pitch, putting her in scoring position for Tomaselli to bring her home. Immaculata responded with a run of their own to cut the lead down to one.

Immaculata took the lead in the bottom of the 4th with a pair of runs but it was short lived as Rutgers-Newark plated three in the top of the next frame. Just as quickly as the Scarlet Raiders took the lead, Immaculata stole it back with five runs in the 5th. With their last at-bats, the Scarlet Raiders scored two runs to come within one of Immaculata, however, they were unable to secure one more run to knot it up.

Game 2: Immaculata 14, Rutgers-Newark 6

In the second game, the Scarlet Raiders scattered 10 hits and scored six runs. Marissa Houseknecht, Tomaselli and Miller led the team with two hits each.

Houseknecht opened the game with a 2 RBI double putting the Scarlet Raiders up 2-0. Immaculata responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame. They would then go on to score 12 runs over four innings while holding the Scarlet Raiders to four over the final two innings.
