Thunderstorms & Cougars Spoil Softball's Senior Day

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball squad dropped a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games to Kean University this afternoon, 16-0 and 4-2. The pair of lossed moved the Scarlet Raiders to 7-19, 1-9 while Kean improved to 19-11, 4-6. Before the doubleheader, the Scarlet Raiders honored their three seniors, Yexenia Osorio, Michelle McMillan and Megan Tomaselli

Game 1: Kean 16, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 inn.)

The Scarlet Raiders were held to two hits in the opening game, one by Michelle McMillan and one by Megan Tomaselli. Madison DiGiorgio (4-8) allowed 12 hits and 11 earned runs with one strikeout in the 1.1 innings pitched. 

Kean opened the game with five runs in the top of the 1st, scoring the five runs on six hits. They followed that inning up with an explosive 10-run 2nd inning to extend their lead to 15-0. The Cougars added a run in the top of the 3rd before their scoring cooled off as they would go on to win the game in five innings. 

Game 2: Kean 4, Rutgers-Newark 2 (6 inn. due to thunderstorms)

The Scarlet Raiders and the Cougars battled the elements and had their second game of the day called early due to thunderstorms. Rutgers-Newark tallied three hits and scored a pair of runs in the second game behind Alex Di Martino's 2 RBIs. 

After three scoreless innings, Kean stamped the first run of the game in the ledger with a run in the top of the 4th. The Cougars then tallied three more runs in the next frame before the Scarlet Raiders got their bats going and cut the lead down to a pair. Mia Lopez got on base for the Scarlet Raiders after getting hit by a pitch before McMillan singled through the left side. Di Martino then picked up her 4th triple of the season to bring home both Lopez and McMillan. 

Madison Umlauf (3-11) faced one batter in the top of the 6th before lightning called the game early and ended the Scarlet Raiders' hopes of a comeback.

The Scarlet Raiders will travel to Ramapo College to take on Ramapo on Tuesday, April 18 at 3:00 pm.
