Men's Volleyball Falls in CVC Championship to Juniata, 3-1

BUENA VISTA, VA | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball squad fell to Juniata, 3-1 (25-18, 27-25, 25-21, 25-23) in the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Championship. With the loss the Scarlet Raiders fell to 15-8 while Juniata improved to 29-2 on the year. 

The Scarlet Raiders hit .200 as a team in the match and were led by Andrew Zaleck and Justin Tuohy who each tallied 11 kills. Martin Chromulak finished the match with 9 kills while Derek Au added 39 assists. Matt Nikishin rounded out the match with a team-high 13 digs. 

In the opening set, Rutgers-Newark fell behind 9-4 and were never able to find their groove as the Eagles took the opening set, 25-18. Rutgers-Newark bounced back in the second set and forced the set to go past 25 as Tuohy tied it up at 25 before Juniata secured the final two points.

Rutgers-Newark used a strong opening half of the 3rd set to jump out to a 15-9 lead over the Eagles. Chromulak put the Scarlet Raiders up seven with a service ace before Daniel Quay put the Scarlet Raiders within one point of victory. 

Juniata jumped out to the lead in the 4th set, before the Scarlet Raiders battled back to take a 15-13 lead over the Eagles. The Eagles used a 6-1 run to leap frog the Scarlet Raiders where they held onto the lead to win their 4th CVC Championship.

The Scarlet Raiders will now await to see if they will earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on Monday, April 17 at 10:00 am.
