Softball Falls to Drew in Non-Conference Doubleheader

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball program dropped a pair of non-conference games this afternoon to Drew University, 8-3, 12-4. The two losses drop the Scarlet Raiders to 7-23 while Drew improved to 22-11. 

Game 1: Drew 8, Rutgers-Newark 3

The Scarlet Raiders scattered four hits in game one and committed two errors. Michelle McMillan finished 2-for-2 with an RBI while Keelin O'Brien and Megan Tomaselli added the other hits. In the circle, Madison DiGiorgio (4-10) pitched 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and six earned runs. 

Drew opened the game with three runs behind a 2 RBI homer by O'Brien which was followed up with an RBI single by Pisani to take a 3-0 lead. Rutgers-Newark tallied two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame after Marissa Houseknecht brought home McMillan followed by an RBI single from Tomaselli.

The Scarlet Raiders knotted it up a three in the bottom of the 2nd when McMillan singled down the right field line. Drew regained the lead in the top of the next frame before adding three more runs in the 6th to take game one from the Scarlet Raiders.

Game 2: Drew 12, Rutgers-Newark 4

Alex Di Martino and McMillan tallied two hits in the loss while Gabriela Forese, Tomaselli and Alison Miller eadh tallied an RBI. Madison Umlauf (3-13) pitched two innings with one strikeout and five earned runs. 

The Scarlet Raiders came out with an explosive four-run inning to start the game behind five straight singles. The Rangers cut into the lead with a run in the second before scoring six runs over the next two innings while holding the Scarlet Raiders scoreless. 

In the 6th, Drew added four runs to the scoreboard to further extend their lead and hold onto the win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, April 22 when they travel to Camden, NJ to take on Rutgers-Camden.
