Rutgers-Newark Baseball Drops Crucial NJAC Contest to NJCU

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball program suffered a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss against New Jersey City University this afternoon, 4-2. The loss dropped the Scarlet Raiders to 20-14-1, 4-10-1 while NJCU improved to 12-24, 2-13. 

The Scarlet Raiders tallied six hits in the loss with Michael Weinbel and Peter Cortez recording the lone RBIs. Vince Taylor (6-2) hurled seven innings and allowed four runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.

NJCU was first to the scoreboard, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 1st to take a 2-0 lead over the Scarlet Raiders. A 2 RBI single in the 4th doubled the Gothic Knights' lead to 4-0, securing all the runs they would need to upend the Scarlet Raiders. 

Rutgers-Newark plated their first run of the game in the top of the 7th behind Paul Recchia who scored after Cortez grounded out. Down by three, Rutgers-Newark added another run in the 8th to cut the lead in half when Weinbel hit an infield RBI single. With their season on the line, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to find two more runs to extend the game as they'd fall to the Gothic Knights.
