Softball Closes Out NJAC Season With Loss to William Paterson

WAYNE, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball squad closed out their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) regular season this afternoon against William Paterson University with a pair of losses, 9-4, 8-0. The losses drop Rutgers-Newark to 8-28, 2-16 while the Pioneers improve to 7-10-1, 22-13-1.

Game 1: William Paterson 9, Rutgers-Newark 4

The Scarlet Raiders tallied eight hits and committed three errors in the game while Madison Umlauf (3-15) tossed three innings with one strikeout. Michelle McMillan and Marissa Houseknecht each finished the game 2-for-3 while McMillan added a team-high three runs. 

Houseknecht opened the scoring ledger for the Scarlet Raiders in the top of the 1st with an RBI double down the left field like to plate McMillan. The Pioneers answered with a pair of runs in the same frame to jump in the lead. Keelin O'Brien knotted the game at two in the 3rd with a single up the middle. The tie wouldn't stay for long as William Paterson tallied three runs in the bottom of the 3rd before adding four more runs over the next three innings.

Game 2: William Paterson 8, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 inn.)

The Scarlet Raiders weren't able to keep the momentum going in the second game as they were held to just three hits which came from McMillan, Gabriela Forese, and Amanda Panaro. 

Rutgers-Newark fell behind 1-0 in the opening inning via a solo homer by Vera before the Pioneers scored three runs in the 3rd and four in the 4th to activate the mercy rule to end the game.
